Comparison
What it is
Cline
An open coding agent. The docs describe a desktop app, a CLI, a VS Code extension, a JetBrains plugin, and an SDK. Every action needs your approval.
Aider
A terminal pair programmer. The homepage says it maps the repo, works across many languages, and commits changes with git messages you can diff and undo.
Best for
Cline
Developers who want a human approval on each step and a choice of editor, including VS Code and JetBrains.
Aider
Developers who live in the terminal and would rather review a commit than approve a chat step.
Pricing model
Cline
The docs list three model paths: usage billing that includes free model options, ClinePass at a flat $9.99 a month for 2 to 5 times the usage of the standard API rate on popular open coding models, or your own provider key. Enterprise controls are a separate docs section.
Aider
No subscription price is printed on the homepage. You install it and pass an API key. The directory lists the software as free, with connected model APIs billed by that provider.
Free tier
Cline
Not a full product free tier in the Midjourney sense. The docs say the usage-billing path includes free model options, and that you can bring your own key. ClinePass is a paid shortcut at $9.99 a month.
Aider
The application does not show a paid plan on its homepage. The model is the bill. You cannot treat a missing price as unlimited hosted usage.
Platforms
Cline
Desktop, CLI via npm, VS Code, and JetBrains. The docs also say it runs in Cursor, Windsurf, Zed, and Neovim through ACP mode.
Aider
Terminal first. The homepage says you can also run it from an IDE by adding comments, and that it can use local models. Install is a pip command.
Key strengths
Cline
Approval before file edits, commands, and browser steps. You can pick usage billing, a $9.99 plan, or your own key. The coding-agents shortlist ranks it for that approval step.
Aider
Git is the review surface. The homepage says it commits with sensible messages, can lint and test after a change, and can take images, web pages, or voice as context. The shortlist ranks it as the git-native terminal agent.
Limitations
Cline
ClinePass is $9.99 a month, so the bill is not only a provider key. Hosted usage and your own key are different charges. You are still the one approving steps, which is slower than an agent that runs ahead.
Aider
The homepage's example model flags name older model IDs. Treat those as examples of the key flag, not as a current model recommendation. There is no editor approval card. Review happens in the diff and the commit.
Prices were checked against the sources below on Nov 1, 2026. They exclude tax unless a source says otherwise, and they change. Where a figure could not be pinned down, the cell says to check the site.
Pick one
Pick Cline ifyou want each command and edit to wait for approval, in VS Code, JetBrains, or the terminal, and you might pay $9.99 for ClinePass.
Pick Aider ifyou want the agent in the terminal, the result in git, and you already have a model key.

Questions
- Which open-source agent should I install?
- The coding-agents shortlist puts Cline sixth and Aider seventh, both after the hosted daily drivers, and this page does not move them. Pick Cline for the approval step. Pick Aider if the review you trust is a git commit. The scores are both 4.4.
- How much does Cline cost?
- The docs list ClinePass at $9.99 a month, usage billing with free model options, and bring-your-own-key. ClinePass is described as 2 to 5 times the usage of the standard API rate on popular open coding models. A provider key is billed by that provider.
- How much does Aider cost?
- The homepage does not list a subscription. It shows a pip install and an API key flag. The directory lists the software as free and says connected model APIs are billed by the provider. Budget the model, not a seat.
- Does Cline work in Cursor?
- The Cline docs say it works in Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code, JetBrains, Zed, and Neovim via ACP mode. That is Cline's agent inside the editor. It does not replace Cursor's own subscription or Aider's terminal workflow.
- Does Aider edit without git?
- Git is the point of the homepage. It says Aider commits changes with messages and that you use git to diff and undo them. If you do not want commits as the review step, Cline's approval flow is the closer fit.
