Comparison
What it is
Descript
A transcript editor for talking video and podcasts. You cut the media by editing the words. The pricing page also lists recording rooms, Underlord, filler-word removal, and clips.
Riverside
A recording studio for interviews and talking video. Plans meter separate-track hours, then add editing, clips, hosting, and publishing. The FAQ says Magic Clips do not spend AI credits.
Best for
Descript
Podcasters and YouTubers who finish a conversation they already recorded, or who want text-based cleanup.
Riverside
Hosts who need the remote recording itself, in separate tracks, and then a path to clips and publishing.
Pricing model
Descript
Freemium. On 1 Nov 2026 the pricing page showed Free at $0, Hobbyist at $16 and $24 per person a month, Creator at $24 and $35, and Business at $50 and $65. It says annual billing saves up to 35% over the monthly plan. Enterprise is custom.
Riverside
A free starter plus paid plans. On 1 Nov 2026 the FAQ said annual billing saves up to 20%: Pro from $29 to $24 a month ($288 a year), Grow from $39 to $34 ($408 a year), and Webinar from $99 to $79. Business is custom. The free card was $0.
Free tier
Descript
Yes. Free is $0 and includes 60 media minutes a month, transcription in 25 languages, and 720p export. The Hobbyist card is the one that says watermark-free export, at 1080p, with 10 media hours and 400 AI credits a month.
Riverside
Yes, as a one-off. Free is $0 for 2 hours of multi-track recording, with a watermark and up to 720p. It is not a monthly 2-hour allowance. Unlimited single-track recording is listed on that card.
Platforms
Descript
Descript's editor. The pricing page lists local export and a shareable web player, and live chat inside the app. It does not print a phone-app price.
Riverside
A browser studio. The pricing FAQ describes studios, separate tracks, and publishing out to YouTube, Spotify, and Apple, among others. Pro is 1 studio. Grow is 2.
Key strengths
Descript
Edit by deleting words. Hobbyist includes filler-word removal, Studio Sound, clips, and AI speech. Creator adds 4K export, 30 media hours, and 800 AI credits. Recording rooms are included, from 2 hours on Free.
Riverside
Separate audio and video tracks are the product. Pro adds up to 4K, 48 kHz audio, 15 hours of separate-track downloads, and 2,000 AI credits. The FAQ says Magic Clips, Magic Audio, and the AI Co-Creator do not require credits. Translation and AI B-roll do.
Limitations
Descript
Free is a small monthly media bucket, and watermark-free export is written on the Hobbyist card rather than the free one. If the hard part is capturing a remote guest in separate tracks, Riverside is the recorder.
Riverside
The $0 plan does not renew a monthly multi-track bucket. It is one 2-hour multi-track try, with a watermark. Separate-track downloads on Pro stop at 15 hours even though recording itself is described as unlimited. Both products have partner links.
Prices were checked against the sources below on Nov 1, 2026. They exclude tax unless a source says otherwise, and they change. Where a figure could not be pinned down, the cell says to check the site.

Questions
- Should I record in Riverside and edit in Descript?
- You can. They overlap, and they are not the same job. Riverside's pricing page is built around the recording and separate tracks. Descript's page is built around editing the transcript, and it also includes recording rooms. Pick the one whose first screen matches the step you are stuck on.
