TokenEconomizer
Apache-2.0 plugin that learns from earlier coding-agent sessions to cut cost in a repository.
Also known as Token Economizer
What it does
TokenEconomizer is a Microsoft Research plugin, with co-authors at UC Berkeley and Microsoft Security, published as v0.1.0 on October 26, 2026. The release notes say it makes Claude Code, Codex, the GitHub Copilot CLI, and Pi cheaper to run in repositories you work in often, without changing the agent. It learns from finished sessions and changes what later sessions in that repository start with. The README describes three mechanisms: micro-skills, tool pruning, and a failure-loop guard that can redirect a stuck turn and never stops the turn itself. Tool pruning and the loop guard are on by default. Micro-skills is off by default. On the paper's SWE-Bench runs, the v0.1.0 notes say mean cost was 18.4-30.9% lower across five agent-model combinations, cheaper in all 30 repository-combination cells, and Pass@1 was up in 4 of 5. The supported-version table lists Claude Code 2.1.300 to 2.1.310, Codex 0.153.1 to 0.164.0, Copilot CLI 1.0.83 to 1.0.102, and Pi 1.2.0 to 1.3.0, and says newer versions have not been tested yet. Experimental support for opencode and for Cursor Agent is in the README after commits merged on November 1, 2026. The README says Cursor 3.24.9 loaded the local plugin, and that hook delivery from a live Agent session has not yet been verified. The license is Apache 2.0. The README does not list a price for the plugin. Its model calls run through the agent you already use.
Who is TokenEconomizer for?
Developers who already run Claude Code, Codex, the GitHub Copilot CLI, or Pi and want that agent to spend less in a repository they use often.
